Skiing and stuff

The backcountry is sure to be more crowded this winter. First off, make sure you're you start with an AIARE avalanche education class. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, and don't just "wing it" because your buddy said this area *never* slides. Don't be dumb, for your sake and everyone else's.

The versatility of the original Shift binding in a DIN (and weight) that might appeal to lighter, less aggressive skiers. A great option for folks looking for a 50/50 setup and aren't thinking about hucking massive cliffs or skiing super aggressively on or off resort.

BCA Tracker 3

Whatever you do, just don't buy a Pieps.

After the debacle of the Pieps DSP Pro/Sport, maybe you're looking for a new avalanche beacon. Maybe you're headed into the backcountry for the first time. IMO, the Tracker 3 does everything you want in a great form factor and great usability. With 3 antennas, you can locate multiple burials and isolate one signal over others. The distance readout is clear and easy to read, and it's light and comfortable to wear.

Renoun Endurance 98

An excellent all-mountain ski that outperforms its weight.

An excellent all-mountain ski that outperforms its weight. Renoun uses patented VibeStop tech that allows these skis to get *stiffer* the more force you put into them. Did you ever make Oobleck as a kid? This polymer works under a similar principle -- the skis are softer when you're just cruising and gradually stiffen up when you start charging. And no joke, you can feel it happen.

With 22 vents, no day on the mountain will be too hot or too cold.

Black Diamond Jetforce Pro Avalanche Airbag Pack 35L

Submitted by:

It's not the cheapest avalanche pack, but dang it's cool.

The latest iteration of Black Diamond's Jetforce line comes with a few major changes. The electric inflation system remains -- making this pack easier to travel with, but the entire backpack system is now modular. You can attach a 10-liter, 25-liter, or 25-liter splitboard booster pack to the JetForce Pro system—making this airbag pack extremely versatile while adding a margin of safety in the backcountry.

A lighter weight touring-focused boot that still gives great performance on the downhill.

I've skiied these boots for 2 years, and have enjoyed the combination of light weight, great range of motion (63 degrees), and a flex that seems to outperform the advertised 100.

Fritschi Diamir Tecton 12 Alpine Touring Bindings

Submitted by:

Get great downhill performance in a package that is half a pound lighter than the Shifts.

The Tectons combine a pin toe with an alpine-style heel lock. The step in is easy, and the power transfer when skiing downhill is excellent. They feel very similar to an alpine binding -- and at a lower weight than the popular Shifts.

A more versatile version of the Hoji Pro Tour that addresses many of the complaints.

Enter the Hoji Free. With a new lower volume fit, a toe lug, and 130 flex, this is the boot that Hoji really wanted to make for himself. This more performance oriented version of the boot is likely to address many of the valid issues that skiers had/have with the Hoji tour.
